Kiruna and Abisko: World-Class Wilderness Experiences

Beskrivelse

Information

The range of activities in Sweden’s northernmost town and its surrounding region is extensive. The selection is wide. The possibilities many.

Choosing well, however, is essential.

We know Kiruna and Abisko — and design coherent experience programmes tailored to the group, the setting and the purpose.

The Journey – A Scenic Prelude

Perfect Moments always seeks — where possible — to make necessary transport a natural and integrated part of a carefully designed programme.

For this reason, we often use Narvik as the starting point when planning group travel to Kiruna.

The railway line between Narvik and Kiruna is widely regarded as one of the most scenic in the world. Particularly on the Norwegian side, the journey offers striking views. The train moves through a landscape that is both dramatic and constantly changing. In places, the railway has quite literally been carved into the mountain — metre by metre.

Stopover in Abisko — Arctic Wilderness at Its Finest

The full value of the railway journey is realised when taken in two stages. A morning departure brings you to Abisko, where activities in unspoilt Arctic nature frame the stay.

From February through May, the programme may include dog sledding, snowmobile excursions, ice climbing and heli-skiing. During summer and early autumn, the area becomes an exceptional setting for guided hikes and off-road cycling.

Abisko is also widely recognised as one of the finest locations from which to observe the Aurora Borealis. Known as Sweden’s driest region, it offers a high number of clear nights throughout the winter season. Combined with minimal light pollution and its favourable position beneath the auroral oval, this creates particularly strong viewing conditions. The travel guide Lonely Planet has highlighted the area as one of the world’s best Northern Lights destinations.

Kiruna — At the Heart of Sápmi

From Abisko, the journey proceeds eastwards to Kiruna — completing the Arctic rail passage across the borderland landscape.

A visit to Kiruna is also a visit to Sápmi — the traditional lands of the Sámi people. Kiruna shares a long history with the Sámi community, and Sámi culture and language remain a visible and valued part of local life. Authentic experiences rooted in Sámi traditions therefore form a natural element when we design programmes here.

Icehotel — The Original Since 1989

Just outside Kiruna lies a landmark unlike any other in the Arctic. Marketed as “Icehotel — the original since 1989”, it remains exactly that: the original. All others are interpretations.

Each winter season, the hotel is rebuilt with an entirely new design, carefully conceived and hand-crafted by around forty artists from across the world. Creative minds gather to shape the walls and interiors of this remarkable structure. For five months, the ephemeral art can be experienced in full. With the arrival of spring, it melts and returns to the Torne River.

The spectacular ice structure comprises fifteen individually designed suites and twenty standard rooms. Each year, a striking snow chapel is also created, complete with altar and benches formed from natural ice.
